Indianapolis Sedation Dentists

Just the thought of having a dental appointment can make some people anxious. Millions of Americans have dental anxiety. But avoiding the dentist’s office only creates more problems like gum disease or premature loss of your teeth. If fear is preventing you from maintaining good oral health, sedation dentist Dr. Julia Shalit can help.

What is a Sedation Dentist?

A sedation dentist uses safe techniques to help you relax, so that you can get the dental treatment that you need. Dr. Shalit offers two options—nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. What’s involved?

Sedation

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is an odorless and colorless gas that reduces anxiety. A small mask will be put over your nose, so that you can breathe the gas during your treatment. You’ll be alert and know what’s happening during your treatment, but you’ll be relaxed.

After your dental treatment, you’ll breathe pure oxygen to clear the nitrous oxide. You’ll be able to drive home from your appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If your anxiety requires a treatment stronger than nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation is available. You’ll receive oral medication that is commonly used to reduce anxiety. You’ll still be conscious, you’ll have your reflexes and your vital signs will be monitored. Oral conscious sedation relaxes you, so that you’ll have little or no memory of your dental procedure.

After your dental procedure, you’ll be somewhat drowsy. So in advance of your appointment, arrange for a ride home.

It really is possible to enjoy your dental visit. One of our patients commented: “I always enjoy my visits to Pure Zen Dentistry, and that’s saying a lot, since I have detested dentists as a whole for about 20 years! My hygienist is superb! She knows dentistry in and out and is definitely a “people person.”
